My husky girl is almost 4 and a rescue. She has a chronic cough (chronic as in she had it the whole 1 1/2 yrs the previous owner had her also and has the whole year i’ve had her). The previous owners had her to the vet repeatedly finding nothing but probable allergies, as well as i’ve had her to my vet also with no real cause. It seems to directly coincide with our own allergies as far as when it’s worse and very much has all the symptoms of chronic bronchitis. Sometimes Benadryl helps but I honestly do not want to keep her on it constantly nor any meds if possible. Are there any herbal, oils, holistic or natural remedies that I can use for suppressing a cough? I give her honey once or twice a day and the last couple meals have sprinkled slippery elm on her food to see if that helps but any advice you could give I would SO appreciate. Thank you!
I can understand your not wanting to just keep suppressing this dog’s symptoms with Benedryl. Unfortunately before we can treat the dog using an alternative therapy we still need to know why the dog is coughing. I know that you said the vet cannot find anything but I am including a link to an article that outlines some of the many reasons that dog may have a cough. Make sure that your vet has ruled out ALL of these things. Baring that this may be zinc related and might respond the addition of more zinc in the diet. You can try feeding foods high in zinc first and if that does not help you can try adding 25 mgs of chelated zinc right before bed. But I would look at the other factors first listed in this article. http://www.webvet.com/main/2012/09/28/11-reasons-your-dog-coughing
Thank you Margit! Between our other vet visits and our most recent one last week he has ruled out everything. She has had test after test, cultures, ultrasound, xrays, etc…as of a few days ago he has decided to try zyrtec for allergies as he has said that dog allergies have been far worse this year than any other year and he has had the most luck with this particular med for them. It has gotten substantially better in the last few days since starting it. I’m going to keep her on that for the time being to give her some relief and then perhaps I can try the zinc you talked about or possibly seek out natural remedies to strengthen her immune system for the allergies. Thanks again! 🙂
Poor zinc absorption is at the root of many maladies in Huskies, immune system problems being one of them.
I had no idea and never really knew much about zinc problems with huskies besides zrd…i’m going to try adding zinc rich foods as you suggested. If I end up giving her chelated zinc can I give just human form or is there a dog specific form I should give? The zyrtec cuts down the cough somewhat but does not take it away so i’m going to start working on the zinc/immune system.
The zinc formulations are the same, Marci. Just go to the health food store and find zinc in either chelated, picolinate,or gluconate forms. You want to look for 25mgs size
